“Recently, when talking to my Uncle Buddy, I learned a lot about the days surrounding my dad’s car accident. I specifically learned about a story that makes my heart swell. It’s an example of how resilient children are and how beautiful each of our grief stories can be.
Before the service, my mom and several family members took my brother and I to see our dad to say our goodbyes. While I think open caskets are so bizarre, in this circumstance I really believe it would help make the loss of our dad feel real. It allowed us to make a little more sense of our story and of the words that people kept saying to us. Naturally, we didn’t fully understand what was happening.My brother and I sat on the floor in front of the casket drawing pictures of flowers, trees, and butterflies. We also wrote notes to him. There may have even been a paper airplane or two. Each time we completed a drawing or note, we placed it in the drawer on the side of the casket. Apparently, this went on for many more drawings and notes. The drawer was getting full, so we had to start putting our drawings in the casket with our dad. Soon, the casket was full of our paper airplanes, stickers, drawings, and notes. Right before leaving, I asked if I could a sticker on dad’s coat. I was picked up so I could put the sticker on my dad’s lapel.It was a smiley face with ‘HAVE A NICE TRIP’ written on it.Everyone smirked, then they closed the casket. What a sendoff.”-Liz
